He and Margaret made another group of friends from all over Canada and the USA. Stan took up golf and adored the incredible beach at his front door. Stan and Marg also spent many winters in the small town of Mexico Beach on the Florida Panhandle. Stan delighted in being co-owner with his dear friend Charlie Cash of a 1950s Farmall Cub tractor. They were active members of the community as volunteers at the Johnstown Milling Frolic and the Seniors Club. Stan and Marg moved to Irish Cove year-round after retirement. The lawyer called out to Stan's son to return and quietly told him ''Your Dad is one of the good ones, one of the really good ones.'' They exchanged some stories and laughs and Stan continued on his way. They told how Stan's calm, kind approach to the law led to fair decisions that had significant positive impacts during troubled times in their lives.Ī couple of years ago, Stan and his son were walking in Petersfield Park and met a local lawyer who knew Stan well. His family has been delighted to hear many stories over the years from people who appeared in Stan`s court. Stan retired from full time duties in 1997. Stan smiled when his siblings and friends teasingly addressed him as “Your Honour”, he was very proud of his work but was a modest man unimpressed by titles. Stan practised law with the firm of Burchell, Sullivan, Smith and Campbell until being appointed Crown Prosecutor in 1974 and then a judge of the Provincial Court of Nova Scotia in 1979. They were married in 1964 and settled in Sydney where they raised their family. They stayed in touch by mail while Margaret went to Toronto to further her nursing education and Stan to St. The new couple spent that summer attending square dances and kept dancing for the rest of their time together. While hanging out with the Cash brothers, Stan fell for their sister Margaret and a love story began that would last for over 60 years. More important than all the natural wonders and fun activities, Irish Cove was where Stan met the love of his life. He loved the people of Irish Cove, his Campbell and Cash relatives and all the friends that make it such a special place. He was happiest in “IC”, whether boating on the Bras d'Or or quietly reading a book standing calmly in the water or teaching children how to dive off John R's rock snowmobiling in winter or snorkelling in the summer, or simply enjoying a Gin & Tonic on the veranda as the best sunset in the world unfolded in front of him. Stan was equally proud of his connection to Irish Cove where he spent almost every summer of his life. He was always pleased to meet and reminisce with fellow “Northenders”. Stan was born on Maand raised on Forbes Court in Sydney. Stan lived with Lewy Body Dementia for the past five years.
